What a way to start 2024 – we certainly rocked around the clock this week at Farnham Mill as we enjoyed the music, reminisced about what we used to wear and transported ourselves to an American Diner for milkshakes with lots of chocolate sauce and whipped cream. We were delighted to have Jayney sing for us, it got our residents dancing and joining in with hand jives.
Monday 1 January, we started the first day of the year with a look at new year traditions around the world. Of course, the new year is a time for new years resolutions so we tried to see how many words we could make using the word ‘Resolution’. We were very impressed that we found over 70 words.
In the afternoon we had a rock and roll themed afternoon tea. We love having afternoon tea at Farnham Mill as it is a chance to meet new residents, chat with old friends as well as enjoy a nice cup of tea and cake.
Tuesday 2 January, before it reached twelfth night, we started taking down our decorations. One of our lovely gentlemen gave us a helping hand.
In the afternoon we created ‘2024’ collages using tissue paper. They looked very bright and colourful.
Wednesday 3 January, our Music Therapist worked with a group of residents enjoying making their own music by tapping, clapping, or using percussion instruments.
In the afternoon we played bingo which had a 1950’s theme – a time of rock and roll. We reminisced about our favourite singers such as Bill Haley and the Comets and Buddy Holly as well as historical events such as space travel and our motorway system being built. Of course, chocolates were also shared as we played.
Thursday 4 January, after all the chocolate that has been eaten, we played balloon games. As well as a form of exercise, it is also great fun, and we always have a laugh.
It was time for more exercise in the afternoon as we danced and sang along with Jayney. We love the mix of songs she sings for us, and we all agreed that we can’t wait to have her back.
Friday 5 January, we enjoyed our nails being painted or having hand massages in the morning. A time for relaxation.
All rock and roll bands have guitarists so it was our chance to paint and design our very own rock and roll guitar and imagine what songs we would play on it.
Saturday 6 January, now Christmas is over it’s time for us to concentrate on making birthday cards which we sell at Farnham Mill for the charity – Families Supporting Care. We have a lovely display just by the coffee machine so please have a look when you visit.
In the afternoon we enjoyed a 1950’s American Diner Themed Milkshake. There was banana flavour, chocolate, whipped cream as well as chocolate and strawberry sauces. Delicious.
Sunday 7 January, as the sun made a brief appearance, we decided to enjoy some time out by the pond and check up on the ducks and geese.
In the afternoon a few residents watched a movie and the ‘usherette’ served sweets and crisps not just to them but all around the home. What a great way to end a busy week at Farnham Mill.
