What a week of celebrations it’s been at Farnham Mill. Royal themed quizzes, games, tea parties and craft all culminating in a weekend watching King Charles III being crowned which, for some of us, brought back memories of the late Queen Elizabeth’s coronation. After the ceremony we enjoyed the first barbecue of the year and a performance by Natasha. We also enjoyed two trips out this week, one to a local school’s Coronation Tea Dance and another to the local garden centre. It’s certainly been a week to remember.
Monday 1 May, our lovely music therapist, Laura, worked with some of our residents. First, she held a group session followed by a couple of one-to-one sessions. We started the group session by singing the National Anthem as we were joined by King Charles and Queen Camilla.
In the afternoon we enjoyed a royal themed afternoon tea with a quiz. We learnt how many rooms there are in Buckingham Palace, over 700, and decided that they would need quite a few gallons of polish each week!
Tuesday 2 May, our morning started with exercises and stretching. Today we added Union Jack flags to wave. This certainly worked on our arm muscles and is great preparation for Saturday’s Coronation.
In the afternoon our baking club had a go at making the Coronation Quiche. It certainly looked good enough to serve to the King himself.
Other residents got to work and made some bunting to put up for the Coronation.
Wednesday 3 May, residents on all floors made crowns to wear for the coronation. We think we did quite well and wondered if King Charles would prefer to wear one of our crowns, they are certainly not as heavy as his.
We had walks outside and admired the blossom on the trees whilst chatting to other residents and staff in the sunshine.
In the afternoon we were so pleased to have Jayney back performing for us. She sang a great selection of songs that really had us all singing along and even dancing.
At the end of all the partying we celebrated a lovely gentleman’s birthday and he shared some of his birthday cake with us.
A couple of our residents were also invited to a special Coronation Tea Dance held at Robert Mays school in the afternoon. There was a delicious cup of tea and homemade cakes to enjoy.
Thursday 4 May, some residents worked on a King Charles collage, whilst others played a game of ‘Pin the Jewel on the Sceptre’.
There was flower arranging in the afternoon and a small group of residents went out to visit the local garden centre. They enjoyed seeing the displays of plants and gifts and enjoyed a nice cup of tea in the café.
Friday 5 May, after such a busy week, we relaxed with manicures and hand massages. Just right ahead of the busy weekend of celebrations.
In the afternoon we enjoyed another afternoon tea. This is an opportunity to sit, chat and make new friends whilst enjoying a cup of tea and cake.
Saturday 6 May, whilst residents watched the Coronation on televisions around the home or in their rooms, they were given special commemorative gift bags with sweets in.
A delicious BBQ lunch was cooked, and families joined us to toast the new King and Queen. Later in the afternoon the wonderful Natasha performed for us which really finished off a fantastic day of celebrations.
Sunday 7 May, the morning started with walks around the garden and church services. So lovely being out in the fresh air.
In the afternoon a ‘Royal Drinks Trolley’ toured the home offering residents a drink of their choice to toast the newly crowned King and Queen. What a great week of celebrations we have had at Farnham Mill. One we will certainly remember.
