This week, to celebrate “Game Shows”, Farnham Mill remembered some of the game shows we watched in our past such as The Generation Game, Play Your Cards Right, What’s my Line and Name that Tune and we enjoyed playing some of them again. We also enjoyed singing and dancing along with one of our favourite singers, Terry Owens. The highlight though was when we took a few residents to Hill House to take part in an ‘inter-home’ quiz and we triumphantly returned with the winner’s cup.
Monday 14 November and we spent the morning playing What’s my Line. It was focused on jobs that don’t really exist anymore such as Gas Lamp Lighters, Rat Catchers and even Milkmen.
In the afternoon we played Biscuit Bingo and enjoyed a lovely box of biscuits when we got a line. Its great fun and gets us all involved, including our wonderful staff.
Tuesday 15 November and some of our residents played sensory games. This involves jigsaw puzzles, wooden puzzles and mazes and lots of hands-on touching as well as a mental challenge.
One of our residents also had a trip out to Starbucks in Sainsburys for coffee – how lovely to see all the different things for sale.
In the afternoon we played the Price is Right, we had to guess the current price of everyday items such as a pint of milk, butter and even a house. This was very interesting as we compared the prices today with prices in the 1980s – we had quite a shock when it came to the price of petrol and a house!
Wednesday 16 November and we enjoyed a game of Name That Tune, and as usual, our musical quiz ended up with a big sing-a-long.
In the afternoon some students from Lord Wandsworth College came and played Scrabble with us and we also had one of our favourite entertainers sing for us “Terry Owens”. We certainly enjoyed it and had a great time singing and dancing along with him.
Thursday 17 November and we were taken back in time to Bruce Forsyth’s Generation Game, always a favourite Saturday night television programme and the part that we all loved was the ‘conveyor belt’ where you had to memorise the prizes as they moved along. We had our own version at Farnham Mill where we had to memorise items on a trolley before they were covered over. We all agreed it was very hard, but we all remembered the cuddly toy!
In the afternoon our residents arranged the flowers to be displayed around the home, whilst other residents went to Hill House to take part in the ‘Inter-Homes Quiz’. It really was a great event and so nice to meet residents from the other homes. Farnham Mill residents really did us proud by coming first and bringing home the cup. Well done Farnham Mill.
Friday 18 November and we had a relaxing day of hand massages and one to ones with staff which, of course, tends to end in a song and dance.
We celebrated a lovely lady’s birthday with delicious cake which we were all able to share. We also enjoyed some time outside and watched what our ducks were up to on the pond.
Saturday 19 November and we did a ‘Game show’ word game. We had to see how many words we could make out of ‘Deal or No Deal’. We enjoy these as it keeps our brains active but is also a chance to work together and socialise over a cup of tea.
There was more tea in the afternoon as we enjoyed a ‘Game Show’ theme afternoon tea. A chance to chat about what we used to watch as we enjoyed a hot cup of tea and delicious cake. What better way to spend an afternoon.
Sunday 20 November and it was a very lazy start to the day. Peaceful walks outside to the pond and catching up with the news in the Sunday papers, whilst some residents went to church.
The afternoon was much busier as our ladies gathered for their regular knitting club. We love to see our residents knitting and chattering about what they have knitted in the past, and how they encourage others to take part.
