Another busy week at Farnham Mill as we celebrated the 1960’s with lots of great music playing around the home which included The Beatles, Elvis and Dusty Springfield. We enjoyed live music from Terry James as he performed many of our favourite songs from the 1960’s. We experienced a rock and roll themed afternoon tea as well as a quiz on the cost of living in the 1960’s. A game of Bingo with chocolate as prizes was played which was 1960’s theme of course! What could be better? As well as all the planned activities, we did some of the things we like best like sitting with our family and playing dominoes.
Monday 27 March, our music therapist continued to work with all our residents. Starting with a group session and then doing some one-to-one work.
There was a glimpse of sunshine, so residents spent some time on the balcony or in the garden. We were able to dust off our sunhats.
In the afternoon residents enjoyed chatting together as we served tea and cakes around the home.
Tuesday 28 March and ‘groovy tie dye plates’ were being created. Lots of fun with paint and water.
In the afternoon we decorated some cupcakes. Again, they were very ‘groovy’ we used colourful icing the chef had prepared for us. When we squeezed the piping bag we weren’t quite sure what colour would come out, it was very interesting for us to do.
Wednesday 29 March, during the morning, whilst a word game was taking place on the ground floor, Nicolle had a trolley visiting all floors inviting residents to do their own piece of tie dying. The results were very colourful and we think look very effective. The end results will be displayed on our Art Board soon.
In the afternoon we enjoyed a 1960’s Rock and Roll themed afternoon tea. Music of the 1960’s played and we sat down to enjoy a cup of tea and piece of cake whilst reminiscing the days we used to go to dances and what we would wear. Scrabble was also being played in our activities room – it was very competitive!
Thursday 30 March, after a morning playing sensory games around the home, we had a busy afternoon celebrating a resident’s birthday as well as flower arranging.
We spotted our first ducklings of the year which shows spring really has arrived.
Friday 31 March, it was a morning spent painting pictures of 1960’s fashion. It gave us a chance to reminisce about what we used to wear.
In the afternoon we had the wonderful Terry James perform for us. He performed a great mix of 1960’s songs which we sang along to.
Saturday 1 April, in the morning, residents sat together reminiscing about the 1960’s. They had to guess the price of things in the 60’s and what their price is now, such as the average cost of a house in the 60’s was £2,500. We really wished that was the price now!!!
In the afternoon we played a game of bingo with a 1960’s theme. So many things that brought back memories, watching TV programmes with our families such as Thunderbirds, Z Cars and The Saint. However, the best part of the game was that we all got some chocolate at the end even if we didn’t win.
Sunday 2 April, as it was Palm Sunday, Father John called in to hand out Palm crosses to us.
Then our Library trolley visited all floors. This week we had a bigger selection of books for our male readers. It’s a great opportunity to chat to residents about their favourite authors and how much we love to immerse ourselves in a good story.
In the afternoon we enjoyed a 1960’s classic film – The Sound of Music. This was released in 1965 and we have all grown up singing along to Do Ra Mi and Edelweiss. We had an ‘usherette’ handing out popcorn, sweets and chocolate which added to the whole cinema experience.
